Historical Museums

I’ve been busy, but went over to the forum that West Chambers County Chamber of Commerce put on last Monday.  I was allowed three (3) minutes to speak and let me tell you, that is only 180 seconds.  Anyone that knows me, I’m just getting wound up in five minutes, so you can imagine I didn’t get to say everything I wanted to about my town and my platform.

But, I did tell about Old River Baptist and the Historic Little Rock Baptist church, both are a great part of our community.  I told about the Floating Capital of Texas, The Cayuga, that came up our Old River and was eventually bought by one of the original settlers, Robert Wiseman.  (see the story on the ORW History pages at www.orwfoundersday.com

They asked me what did I think my duty was as City Council Woman.  I said it was making hard decisions, such as dissolving the police department before the town went bankrupt.  There are other reasons, but I won’t give them at this time.

I was invited to go to the Chambers County Historical Commission meeting and found a great attendance of members and guests that are interested in saving and preserving the History of Chambers County.  There is also a page on that at the website.

I then received a call to attend the Dayton Historical Commission on Monday Night coming and I accepted on behalf of our town.  They will help us in our founders day endeavor.  I am looking forward to that.  I will try to put links on the website for their museum, too.

You don’t have to spend money and travel way off to have a vacation.  Make your home your headquarters and drive to a different museum every day for a week.

On the website is information about ones that I am discovering as I put the historical pages together.

I’m giving out more of the Ambassador and T-Shirt sponsor T-Shirts today, so I will write later on this week.

Delivering T-Shirts

I have been able to deliver some T-Shirts.  I took my mom to the emergency room at San Jac last Sunday the 5th and she was in until Saturday the 11th.  Heart Catheter, stint and all of that.  Being home now, I’m keeping a close watch on her.

But, I was able to get by R&L Auto to give Ronald his T-Shirt and he got a couple of more for his staff.  He will be selling T-Shirts there, so that is another place to buy them besides City Hall and Dwight’s.

I’ve missed some interviews I was going to get for the ORW Newsletter and website.  I will be interviewing Boyce Morris regarding the history of Old River and the artifacts he has collected.

Also, Pastor Joe Landry of Little Rock Baptist Church on FM 565 is building a much needed Fellowship Hall with the help of Old River Baptist Church.  I will try to make it out there this week to meet with both men.

Council meets tonight so try to be there and voice your opinion.

I ordered my signs for display around town.  I could afford two of them, so we will see if they are seen by everyone.  I sure hope so!

God Bless!!!

Campaign 2009

Tuesday I went by R & L Auto Supply.  Roland wasn’t there but I left my flyer on the “Chat Table” there and will stop in again to see if I can catch Roland in.

I then went on to the Barber Shop and had fun there talking to all the guys waiting to get their haircuts and the Barbers themselves.  We have such great people in our town and I just love talking to them.

They had questions that I answered and seemed to agree with all my campaign points.  I left my flyer there and off I went.

This is such fun, but I sure do hope I win, because I love this town so much.  The more I meet the citizens and get to know them, the more I want to do for them to make this a fabulous town to live in.

If you have anyone I should visit, just let me know!

God Bless,

Colleen

Campaigning

Well, tomorrow I’m going out to do a little campaigning.  I’ve never done it before, but there is one thing I can do is “Talk”.  Anyone that knows me, knows that.

I hope to go to some businesses in town.  They have always been kind to me in supporting the Old River-Winfree Founders Day, so I pray they will think I am doing a good job.

I love this town.  I love THE RIVER.  I see so much potential, it just stuns me what can be done to make this a beautiful town.  I just can’t believe it hasn’t been done yet.

I don’t give up!  I keep on and keep on until the officials with the County, State, and anyone else I have to talk to listens to me about what Old River-Winfree can and should be!

They usually do.  It takes time though.  It’s always said that government is slow as molasses and I am here to testify that it certainly is.  Sometimes it is like pulling teeth to get something enacted.

Council votes on it and makes it an ordinance, but the follow through is mighty slow!

I wish you could know what I know about the history of this old town.  It is amazing to know the people that came before us.  Way back in the young days of the 1800′s.

What a history.  I hope that the Old River-Winfree Founders Day can project that history.  Billy Wallace is going to re-enact a historic event for us that should be a real crowd-pleaser and make all of us aware of what a wonderful town we live in and join me in the “Crusade for the River”.

Got lots more to say (as usual) but have to work on other blogs.

Love you and God Bless!

That’s what I’m talking about!

Coming Home

Coming Home

Coming Home!  I love getting these pictures in my emails!

Just a note to tell you about the Hurricane Ike Recovery Grants that Old River-Winfree has applied for.

The main objective was the drainage in Old River-Winfree.  It is  called the Caney Creek Project, I believe.  It would, without question, help the flooding we have here and really be a boost to our economy.

The council asked for $4 million and in preliminary response we have been tentatively awarded $2.5 Million.

$1.7 Million would go to the top priority, the Caney Creek Drainage Project engineered by Spencer Carnes of the Carnes Engineering Firm.  Spencer has been working on this tirelessly for about a year.  Through government grants, he had an approval, but the conflict with the County put us all into the Hurricane Ike Relief Fund where Mayor Landry and Linda Murphy, City Secretary, really worked for us, dealing with the grant writers, agencies visiting after the Hurricane and keeping up with what was needed by the county from us.

Thanks to them both and Spencers hard work.  We should be hearing soon on the outcome of the preliminary grant.  We should then hear when the funds are available to start the project.

The Caney Creek Drainage Project is a major concern of many townfolk and we are looking forward to the project starting.

When I traveled to Anahuac with the Mayor and Linda to hear what the results of the proportionate funding were, I was excited that, finally, our town would get help on projects we have waited on a long time.

The funds also include economic development, which I am personally hoping will be for a park at THE RIVER bridge for us all to enjoy along with a nice boat ramp.  Just think of Old River-Winfree residents being able to launch their boats safely, canoes to rent, and maybe kayaks.

It would be absolutely great for a boost in revenue for our businesses.

We can hope!   I will keep you updated on what is going on in the town.

Oh yes, be sure and vote for me, Colleen Fontenot, on May 9th.  I have a lot of work left to do for our community!

God Bless,

Colleen

I Believe!

proveallthingssThis is my blog for Old River-Winfree where I am running for City Council Woman 2nd Term.

Here, you will find out what I am working on, what I believe in, and be able to comment.  Please keep your comments kid friendly, even if you disagree with me, OR they won’t be posted and wouldn’t you hate that.

I BELIEVE?  What does that mean?  I am a God-Fearing, washed in the Blood believer.  I believe that I am saved by Grace, not of my works, but by the Grace of God.

I am a member of Old River Baptist Church.  I think I have the best Pastor and church around.  I’m sure we all do.  I don’t attend as often as I should, but communicate often.

I love Old River-Winfree and the citizens and business that live there.  I include myself!  Ha, Ha.

I work to make it a better place and see the good things that could happen to her, if the right people are brought in to play at the right time.

I just opened up the blog, so I will write more later.  The trip to Anahuac and what we found out then was amazing!!  YooHoo!
