Coming Home! I love getting these pictures in my emails!
Just a note to tell you about the Hurricane Ike Recovery Grants that Old River-Winfree has applied for.
The main objective was the drainage in Old River-Winfree. It is called the Caney Creek Project, I believe. It would, without question, help the flooding we have here and really be a boost to our economy.
The council asked for $4 million and in preliminary response we have been tentatively awarded $2.5 Million.
$1.7 Million would go to the top priority, the Caney Creek Drainage Project engineered by Spencer Carnes of the Carnes Engineering Firm. Spencer has been working on this tirelessly for about a year. Through government grants, he had an approval, but the conflict with the County put us all into the Hurricane Ike Relief Fund where Mayor Landry and Linda Murphy, City Secretary, really worked for us, dealing with the grant writers, agencies visiting after the Hurricane and keeping up with what was needed by the county from us.
Thanks to them both and Spencers hard work. We should be hearing soon on the outcome of the preliminary grant. We should then hear when the funds are available to start the project.
The Caney Creek Drainage Project is a major concern of many townfolk and we are looking forward to the project starting.
When I traveled to Anahuac with the Mayor and Linda to hear what the results of the proportionate funding were, I was excited that, finally, our town would get help on projects we have waited on a long time.
The funds also include economic development, which I am personally hoping will be for a park at THE RIVER bridge for us all to enjoy along with a nice boat ramp. Just think of Old River-Winfree residents being able to launch their boats safely, canoes to rent, and maybe kayaks.
It would be absolutely great for a boost in revenue for our businesses.
We can hope! I will keep you updated on what is going on in the town.
Oh yes, be sure and vote for me, Colleen Fontenot, on May 9th. I have a lot of work left to do for our community!
God Bless,
Colleen
